Today we take a look at the Nvidia Geforce GT 710, a popular budget gaming GPU, and overclock it as far as possible. Despite its age and lack of capabilities it can actually run some modern games and is a pretty decent graphics card at only $20. Equipped with Nvidias Kepler architecture, we're going to take a look at how the GT 730 gaming performance is, and also see how 2 GB of Vram DDR3 holds up in 2023. We couldn't test games such as Cyberpunk, Halo Infinite, and Fortnite due to OS incompatibility, but I enjoyed making this video and overclock GPU and briefly explaining how to overclock your GPU. Script (All I could fit):
This is the GT 710. It's a display adapter never intended for gaming - but it's still one of the best-selling graphics cards on Amazon and I want to see if we can force it to run games by overclocking the out of it. It supports direct x 12 so It can start most modern applications but it has a weak core and only 2 gigs of VRAM. So we're gonna overclock it to the point of self-destruction and truly put this thing to the test.
Now there are a lot of different 710s, and ours is the low-profile version by EVGA. Typically they go for 25 bucks on eBay But I got this one \from an untested GPU lot and only paid $4 for it.
One of the biggest problems with this card is not necessarily how crappy they are, but also how many different versions exist. It's normal to have different clock speeds and Vram configurations, but some 710s use entirely different graphics processors which can heavily impact performance. Kinda like the laptop version of the 4090, where it's something completely different.
Luckily, ours is one of the more powerful ones and has GK 208b graphics processor based on the Kepler 2.0 architecture and 28nm process. Aside from its usage in GT 700 cards, its processor was also used in laptops for the GeForce 900 series but hasn't been seen since. It comes equipped with 192 shading units, 16 TMUs, and 8 ROPs, a base core clock of 954 MHz, and 2 GB of DDR3 memory with a 64-bit bus width. Clearly, it doesn't have a lot to work with, but it's better than intel GMA.
But why did this card even exist? Well, it's versatile, and that's really its only selling point. It supports modern graphics APIs, doesn't require external power cables and its 19-watt tdp means you can shove it in just about anything. It also 3 video ports with VGA, HDMI, and DVI, so it'll work with just about any monitor.
And the card performing worse than this person 10 years old GPU
It generally has decent reviews on Amazon. People cite it for being decent at running old games and that it's a nice upgrade from an integrated graphics processor. But at stock speeds, it'll definitely slow down in a modern environment.
Also, it turns out that this isn't actually the worst 700 series card; Something called the GT 705 exists, which was an OEM card used in prebuilt. It has about a third of the total transistors of the 710 and is worse in just about every way, so stay away from it. That card goes for about $15 on eBay, and for only 10$ more you can get this one.
And based on the benchmarks it definitely offers $25 worth of performance. Speaking of which the pc will be testing this GPU with the quad-core i7 4790 with 16 GB of ram and Windows 7 running on an SSD. And yes, I know the processor is old but it's better than the 4130 I was previously using, so consider subscribing so I can afford more PC parts.
So just how does it hold up in 2023. Well we weren't off to a great start my SSD died and we came to the mutual decision that it's best if we parted ways. whips it into the garbage
The first test we did was with 3dmark to get a solid baseline reading before cranking up the clock speeds. It kinda of looked like a really fast PowerPoint presentation, but it was on par with other 710s and got a graphics score of 758.
So it was time to overclock it. This took a while, and along the way, we had some very through artifcating, but eventually found the sweet spot for the GPU and the VRAM both running 300 MHz faster than stock speeds.
