Long COVID and Post-Infectious Syndromes ECHO
Back to the Basics: Improving Patient Outcomes

Bateman Horne Center and the University of Utah Health Project ECHO teams join forces once again to provide a case-based learning series illuminating strategies for assessment and management of Long COVID (PASC), ME/CFS, and related comorbid conditions.

Patient cases are shared in this session for educational purposes. In some instances, the information does not relate to an individual, and instead represents a compilation of disease presentation. In cases involving individual patient information, the patients have authorized the discussion of their case in this setting.

Clayton Powers, DPT, a doctor of physical therapy, explores how simple, compassionate changes in clinical practice can dramatically improve patient outcomes. This powerful presentation centers on the fundamentals of care—communication, trust, and the healing environment—offering clinicians actionable tools to reduce exertion, stress, and post-exertional malaise (PEM) during appointments.

Through personal stories, patient interviews, and research-backed strategies, Dr. Powers demonstrates how providers can foster safety, understanding, and connection for individuals with Long COVID, ME/CFS, and other infection-associated chronic conditions. Learn how setting the tone—literally and figuratively—can help restore dignity, autonomy, and function in the lives of patients.

Topics include:
➡️ Setting up low-exertion, trauma-informed clinical environments
➡️ Avoiding harmful “never words” and rebuilding trust
➡️ Practical ways to reduce PEM risk during appointments
➡️ The power of listening and shared decision-making
➡️ Supporting patients’ relationships and social health
➡️ Staff-wide training for compassionate care

This session was prerecorded, but Dr. Powers joined live in the chat to engage with attendees.

Note to community members: We advise viewers to always speak with their medical care team before making any adjustments or changes to their current care regimen.

Bateman Horne Center’s involvement in this program is made possible with the additional support of the Open Medicine Foundation.
