All of us would love to be the person who always has the right answers, who gets it done well. We all want to get there, but the truth is we don't. We can't. But, but there's always the chance that I can get one step closer. And what gives me that idea or what gives me that impetus? I believe it's the ability to pray, the ability to reflect, and the ability to pay attention to me. Those are important.

Sometimes, sometimes a wisecrack from your son, your daughter, your wife, a wisecrack from a friend, you go, “Whoa, where did that come from?” Sometimes that will be, those are good openings. Sometimes they tell us things about ourselves that we don't want to hear. And when that happens, the ability to hear that. It may hurt your feelings, it may make you mad, but you walk away thinking about it. We should never let any incident go past us un-reflected. We should never let any time that we've had at any event, and just forget about it.

Sometimes, if it's a real tragedy, you have to deal with that. But sometimes, but oftentimes the reflective life means that incidents going around in my head and I probably could have done it better. I probably didn't need to say that and so in that reflection in that kind of quiet time with ourselves, I believe is the beginning of the reflective life. Is it an easy thing to do? No.

And many of us don't have time, we say we don't have time. But one of the advantages, one of the one of the advantages of organized religion, is it takes us to church. And sometimes the best thing that happens at church is quiet. Sometimes just sitting there and thinking is the best thing that can happen. Does God work with grace? Does God work through the scriptures? Yes, I believe all that. But sometimes the truth is best told by what we know about ourselves.
