If you don't want to go through the traditional visa process, it's possible to use your tourist visa days in the Schengen. This would mean you don't do any paperwork before (for many) but come to Portugal (and/or the EU) for your country's visa-free travel allowance. Check what your passport allows. For many, it's 90 days then you will need to leave for 90 days before returning. You can't just leave for one day and it resets. For this example, you get 90 days in a 180 day period. Don't overstay your welcome because you can be fined.
