Somber Echoes is a Metroidvania set in a unique world—a fusion of sci-fi and ancient Greek mythology. Think Hephaestus, Ares, and other familiar mythological faces... only now they’re aboard a city-sized spaceship drifting through the cosmos.
You play as the divine (and possibly part-mechanical?) Adrestia—admittedly, not the most famous name in mythology—and your goal is to stop your deranged sister, Harmonia, who is planning… well, let’s just say, some very bad things.
If that sounds a bit vague, you’re not alone—but hey, a lot of games in this genre offer far less in terms of story.
What the game gets right:
Graphics: While not visually groundbreaking, the level design is solid, the effects are nice, and some enemies are downright disgusting (looking at you, first boss… ugh).
Music: At times, it’s almost epic. Don’t expect something on the level of One-Winged Angel from FFVII, but the soundtrack definitely fits the atmosphere.
Controls: Responsive and smooth—essential for a game of this type.
Performance: The game runs well. Indie Metroidvanias often struggle during chaotic fights or teleport-heavy sequences, but I didn’t experience any slowdowns. Some Steam users mentioned performance hiccups, so maybe those have already been patched.
What the game doesn’t get quite right:
Combat: It’s… linear. Block, strike. Block, strike. Block, strike. You get the idea.
Lack of loot: One of the main joys in this genre is finding awesome new weapons, armor, or powers. I didn’t find any. Sure, you can upgrade your sword and shield, but from what I saw—that’s about it.
The story: Okay, I know Metroidvanias aren’t known for their storytelling, but this one tries—and then kind of gives up halfway. Dear developers, three Dark Souls games’ worth of vague lore is enough for one lifetime. If you’ve got a story to tell—tell it. Don’t bury it under cryptic whispers and half-hints.
Bottom line:
Somber Echoes isn’t reinventing the genre, but it’s a decent little game. If any of this has piqued your curiosity, you can check it out here:
