The Scottish Sun previously told how Mackay announced the deal with Mr McColl’s firm on stage at the SNP conference in autumn 2015, despite concerns being raised about the contract by the government’s ship quango.

Ferguson Marine’s bid was the most expensive of seven bidders and did not come with an industry standard financial guarantee in case the project went wrong. But the Scottish Government still awarded it the lucrative contract.

Disgraced former finance secretary Derek Mackay returned to Holyrood to face questions from MSPs on the delays to two CalMac ferries.

Mr Mackay was transport minister when the contract was approved to build two ferries at the Ferguson Marine shipyard in Port Glasgow.

He later went on to become finance secretary – but quit the job dramatically on the morning of the Scottish budget in February 2020 after it emerged he had been messaging a teenage schoolboy on social media.
