This activity focuses on school skills including: coloring, cutting, counting, attention to tasks, following directions, and glue use.

What to look for: Bilateral coordination - using both hands for the task, appropriate grasp patterns on tools - tripod or quad grasp on crayons and glue stick and thumbs on top when cutting, sequencing the task, recognition of stopping point for cutting, coloring to fill the space and stay within boundary lines, and attending to tasks/following multi-step directions.

Some strategies to try if...
If grasp is incorrect: give verbal cues, setup their hands in the correct grasp, give them a small object (cotton ball, tiny toy, etc) to hold with ring and pinky fingers, use small/broken crayons that only allow use of a few fingers due to size.
If cutting with thumbs on bottom: give verbal cues and setup to correct position, give a visual cue to thumbs - sticker, stamp etc so they can look down and see it.
Not stopping at indicated point: verbal reminders, apply visual cues for end point (stop before you cut the sticker, etc).
Increasing attention/following directions: reduce external stimuli and remove distracting items (leave toys away from the work area, turn off TV/music, etc.), use a calming activity before beginning, take a movement break during the task if needed, and increasing verbal and visual cues toward the current task.
