This is an arrangement for two guitars of the Pavane op 50 by Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) , arranged by my brother Ian Thomson (1941-2015).
The piece was written in 1887. It was originally a piano piece, but is well known as Fauré's version for orchestra and optional chorus. It was first performed in Paris in 1888, becoming one of the composer's most popular works, and remains a popular piece today.
The "pavane," from which Faure's piece borrows its title and its underlying rhythm, is a sixteenth century court dance, performed in pairs, often as part of a wedding procession. It is a sedate and dignified couple dance.
Regarding the tempo, Ian marked this as Allegro moderato, which I think relates to a piano scoring. This seems quite quick for this piece , being about a tempo of 105. In a 1901 Paris publication of orchestral score, the tempo is marked as Andante molto moderato , =84. I have uploaded Ian's version to MUSECORE4 and using this to play the piece, and given a tempo of 85.

Ian also arranged this piece for treble recorder and guitar, and this will also be posted.
