by Karen Zatkulak A mayor charged with stealing thousands from taxpayers has finally announced his resignation. It's a story Newschannel 9 has been covering since February, when we learned of the investigation into Greg Johnson. Greg Johnson gave his letter of resignation to Pikeville's city attorney. Johnson himself wasn't at the special called meeting Monday night, but many residents say it's about time he steps down. Greg Johnson's name is still painted on the window at City Hall. Last month, Johnson was charged four counts of misconduct, and one count of theft over 60 thousand dollars. Back in February, we learned an investigation was underway into the mayor, and vehicles he may have bought with city money for his own personal use.But he remained in office. Last week at city hall we were told repeatedly he wasn't there. But, while we waited, our cameras caught him inside the office. Tuesday we asked for the mayor again, but were told he wasn't in. In fact, the people at city hall don't know when he'll be back or if he'll return before September 1st.That's when his resignation goes into effect. In his letter, he says, "As a result of recent developments and controversy surrounding my service as Mayor, it's become difficult for me to provide effective leadership."But the letter is too little too late for some residents.David Henderson says, "It was about time, it's pretty bad when you have corruption in your government, it takes away from everyone here."Dana Nye says, "I'm happy because we don't need him stealing money from us." While many are glad Johnson is stepping down, they're also dissappointed that he seems to have disappeared from the public who elected him.Dean Roberson says, "I hope at some point he gives a sincere apology to everybody, I think that's coming."We did speak by phone with both Pikeville's attorney and Johnson's attorney.
