A shopkeeper managed to foil a robbery after trapping the assailant under the shutters.

The failed crime happened in a Durham newsagent when the would-be robber attempted to steal the contents of the cash register at knifepoint.

But he quick-thinking shopkeeper was then able to quickly run out the store, lock the door and close the shutters, trapping the intruder until the police came to arrest them.
