!!SPOILERS!! Doctor Who - Big Finish - The War Doctor Begins - A Canary in a Coal Mine !!SPOILERS!!

The Doctor (still performed brilliantly by Jonathon Carley) and his trusty companion Layla (Emma Campbell-Jones - yes, that's Cass from Night of the Doctor so some Red Flags should already be waving...) are exploring strange signals in a remote cottage by a lighthouse. There they meet David (Ken Bones) and Dorothy (Adéle Anderson), a grumpy older couple having marital issues, and soon all hell starts to break lose both at sea and on land.

There's just one problem - this is the wrong Doctor. This more standard set up for a classic episode is very - very wrong for this specific Doctor. Especially given the fact that he’s fine even being called Doctor.

And everywhere he goes he's constantly plagued by a hidden feeling - a sense that something - somewhere - is very very wrong.

I marked this for spoilers because this reveals just what is wrong - so, if you plan to jump into the episode blind, I wouldn't give this a listen. Proceed at your own risk.

This episode shows not only what the War Doctor could have been - given the chance the other Doctors had - but just how far he'll go to protect the innocent. Even if it means, effectively, murdering a part of himself to do it.

The final twist is especially juicy when it's revealed how he got here (hence the name) and it's easily a standout moment from an otherwise boilerplate episode.

While talking about this episode (and, indeed, the War Doctor series as a whole) with a friend of mine - it turned out she'd not heard it and was interested in seeing if she should buy this episode. Posted this clip to show her what she's missing.
