Like a boxer defending her title, Coi Leray tunes out the noise in order to focus on one thing: landing hits. “They don’t know the shit we been through/They don’t know shit about me,” raps one of the year’s breakout artists on her Ctrl performance of “Bout Me.” As her feet bounce side to side and her fists start balling up, the 2021 XXL Freshman inductee momentarily looks ready for a fight. But don’t get it twisted: the artist who named herself after a Japanese pet fish has a mellow side, too. She reveals it in the “No More Parties” video, which finds her craving candle-lit bubble baths over rowdy nights of ragin'. That Lil Durk-assisted track played a sizable part in her BET Award nomination for Best New Artist. She sounded great spittin’ it in our Ctrl format, too. In the last 365, Coi's string of collabs boasts trendy rap names like Kodak Black, Rich the Kid, and Pooh Shiesty, and she was front and center for Mooski’s super-viral “Track Star" vid. So, yeah, try to keep knocking her down — she’ll just duck it all and continue delivering knockouts.
