Hannes Bieger is one of Europe's most in-demand mixing engineers, working for some of the biggest names in the business. With such a wealth of experience, it's no surprise to anyone that his own productions are every bit as beautifully constructed as his high profile clients. Dropping this three tracker on 2nd home Poker Flat, Bieger gives a lesson in tech house dynamics.

Title track 'Tephra' is a true proposition - urgent, skittering drums with deep bass pulses pepper the track, while a delirious lead takes things into epic territory - a track that exists to send chills up the spine of dancers and listeners alike.

'Didyme' is cut from similar cloth - perfectly balanced elements create a whole that far outstrips its minimal elements. Arpeggiated synths sit low in the mix before a lead brings shades of rave into focus.

Rounding out the release, 'Galeras' is more of a heads down affair - tough and funky drums set the pace while bass tones and fragments of melody provide the late night vibe.

There have been few record labels that have made such an indelible mark on the landscape of electronic music as Poker Flat. Founded by Steve Bug in 1999, the label coined a sound and style that dominated club culture for years. Glitchy, mechanised beats paired with moody pads and sinister chords would take hold of the club scene in the mid 00s, but Poker Flat championed these stripped-back sounds well ahead of the pack.
With a back catalogue that includes more than 300 releases, it’s no surprise that many of these remain club staples to this day. Many artists now recognised as household names got their first break with Poker Flat, and the label prides itself on discovering and championing the next wave of artists.
Key to Poker Flat’s success has been their refusal to chase after trends, instead remaining focussed on the sound with which they established themselves. Their aim for the future is to continue to keep putting out exceptional electronic music from exceptional artists.
