Sometimes what looks like deep interest on a first date is actually an interview.

Not curiosity.
Not attunement.
Information gathering.

Excessive early questions about your childhood, past relationships, insecurities, or “patterns” can feel flattering or intimate, but in some dynamics, it’s about assessing how much access, empathy, and self-doubt you’re likely to offer.

The red flag isn’t asking questions.
It’s speed, intensity, and asymmetry, especially if emotional depth is pushed before trust is earned, or if you feel subtly exposed afterward.

And an important clarification:
This is not diagnostic.

• Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a clinical diagnosis that requires a full assessment
• Narcissism also exists on a spectrum of personality traits, which many people have to varying degrees
• Not everyone who asks deep questions early is narcissistic
• And not all narcissistic individuals behave the same way
