For most of the medieval and Renaissance period, the charging of interest was considered usury and both illegal and immoral. Yet, banks in that period existed. The Medici Bank of Florence was famously accused of usury on a number of occasions, but – if they didn’t conduct usurious interest-collecting loans – how did they actually make a living as a bank? How did any bank operate during this period? This class will examine views about usury during this period and the wide variety of methods banks undertook to evade these restrictions and become some of the most powerful families in Europe.
