Описание к видео Benjamin Cooke (1734-1793): Fugue in B-flat Major

World Première Recording
1) Fugue in B-flat Major: 00:00 2) March in C-Major: 3:39
Benjamin Cooke’s father (Benjamin Cooke Sr.) was a music publisher, who was known for having published an edition of the collected works of Arcangelo Corelli. Beginning at age 9, Benjamin Jr. was one of four boy sopranos who sang at performances of the “Academy of Ancient Music”, under the direction of the then-well-known composer Johann Christoph Pepusch. That musician saw to it that Benjamin received an excellent education. When Pepusch passed away, Cooke – now 18 years old – took over the leadership of the Academy. Cooke must have been quite erudite, for he received doctoral degrees from both Oxford and Cambridge universities. In 1760, he became a member of the Royal Society of Music, to which his father had also belonged. Cooke was organist at both Westminster Abbey, and also at the church of St. Martin’s in the Fields. He composed a lot of religious vocal music as well as glees: in addition, he created a good deal of music for the organ, much of which is also appropriate for the harpsichord, such as the fugue and march that you will hear in this recording. Benjamin Cooke died at the age of 59, most likely from a heart attack.
