Couldn’t Get Beat Stems? No Problem! Here’s 3 Things You Should Be Paying Attention To When Mixing Down a Two-Track Beat or Instrumental:

1. Dynamics: If this beat is already mastered you may want to bring the dynamics out a little bit with a transient shaper (in this case using Spiff by @oeksound ). Or if you want to glue the beat and the drums together you can use some bus compression

2. EQ: How does the beat sound? Is it filled out enough in the midrange? Is the low end overbearing? In this case I use an EQ just to raise the mids of the beat to give make the song sound more full and lush with midrange overall.

3. How The Vocal and Beat Interact: Most of the time this just comes down to frequencies and frequency masking (usually in the low mids and midrange). You can use a regular or dynamic EQ to handle this but in this case I use Soothe 2 by @oeksound to sidechain the vocal to the plugin and have it duck down the frequencies where the beat is conflicting with the vocal.
