Last week I walked around the Chelsea galleries in New York City and came across this Adrian Ghenie show, "The Brave New World" at Pace Gallery.

The show is up from November 10 to December 22 and explores the ever-evolving relationship between the human body and technology.

"The Brave New World" features over a dozen paintings and gestural drawings, capturing the paradoxes of our digital age. Ghenie's characters, often immersed in their digital devices, reveal the contradictory nature of technology. Despite fostering connections, these devices also contribute to a pervasive sense of anxiety and isolation in our daily lives.

Known for his versatility, Ghenie continually reinvents his style. His lush renderings of figures in cinematic compositions, rooted in the visual, political, and social histories of Central Europe and Romania, serve as a backdrop for his exploration of contemporary life. In recent years, his works have delved into the culture of disconnection and alienation in our technologically saturated world.

In one striking painting, Ghenie depicts a figure gazing at a wall-mounted TV showing an image of former US President Donald Trump—a poignant commentary on the erosion of privacy in the face of modern media. Another painting explores the use of visual culture in amplifying protests against climate change, referencing controversial events such as the Just Stop Oil demonstrations at the National Gallery in London.

I appreciate the way Adrian skillfully combines luscious, painterly brushstrokes in his figures with the clean, sharp lines defining the spaces that envelop them.
