Roanoke, Virginia, is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. There are fantastic restaurants, the people are noticeably friendly, and there is a low cost of living.

“I think of it as a very, very early Austin or Portland," one person told me during my recent weekend trip to the city of around 100,000 people.

I'd recommend at least three days in Roanoke, especially if you enjoy mountain biking and hiking. There are also two great day trips, which I highlight in this video.
