This is one tutorial you have to check out! Sometimes it's the simplest solution to the hardest task that makes everything come together. This old school trick let's you add sub bass to just the kick drum in a full drum loop or sample!

It's all about knowing how your tools work. But, it's also about knowing about how your tools were designed to work! Using a little clever routing and parameter tweaking, you can target just the kick drum in a full drum arrangement to add sub bass to really make it hit.

You can also accomplish the same ting using a software instrument (MIDI track) in your projects. Just route the audio from the software track to an auxiliary track, via bus, just like the video shows using the audio track.

This is a great way to quickly and easily generate sub bass support for a kick drum that is lacking in power and presence, without having to tackle any arranging or sound design in the workflow. And it can all happen in as little as a minute or less, once you get the hang of it.

For added interest, character and just plain fun, try experimenting with variations on the traditional pure-sine-wave sub bass approach. Just a touch of sawtooth or square wave added in the right proportions can add an edge that can really tear things up! You may also want to consider dabbling in sublet saturation experiments. It's a nice way to rediscover that old school tape sound that eludes so many.
