In 2015, Walter Scott, a 50-year-old Black man, was pulled over in North Charleston, South Carolina for a broken brake light.

Officer Michael Slager claimed Scott grabbed his Taser and posed a deadly threat.
But a bystander, Feidin Santana, recorded the entire encounter.

The video showed Slager shooting Walter Scott eight times in the back as he ran away — then dropping an object near Scott’s body to support his story.

Without that video, the officer’s version would have stood.

In 2017, Slager pleaded guilty to a federal civil rights violation and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The case became a powerful example of how video evidence can mean the difference between justice and silence.
