The Sri Lanka Kataragama Perahera is an annual festival held in July or August in Kataragama, Sri Lanka. The festival is dedicated to the Hindu god Skanda, also known as Kataragama Deviyo, who is revered as the god of war and wisdom. The festival features a grand procession, starting at the Temple of Kataragama and passing by other temples before reaching the Temple of the aboriginal jungle goddess Valli Amman. Devotees from all religions participate in the festivities, cleansing themselves at the Menik River before making offerings at the shrine. The festival also attracts the aboriginal Veddahs of Sri Lanka. Some devotees perform extreme acts of devotion, such as piercing hooks into their skin and swinging from them, or walking on red-hot embers. One highlight of the festival is the Kavadi Dancing, which represents the dance of the peacock, the vehicle of God Skanda.
