IMJIN WAR Ep. 1 - East Asia in the 16th Century: Japan, Korea and China

Описание к видео IMJIN WAR Ep. 1 - East Asia in the 16th Century: Japan, Korea and China

This is the first episode of an ongoing series on the Imjin War, based on my book “THE IMJIN WAR: Japan’s Sixteenth-Century Invasion of Korea and Attempt to Conquer China.”

To kick things off, I give some background on the three main contenders in the conflict: Japan in the sengoku civil war era, as it is conquered / unified by Oda Nobunaga and his successor, Toyotomi Hideyoshi; Korea in the Joseon dynasty, focused on Jurchen tribesmen to the north and wako pirates to the south and oblivious to the emerging threat posed by Hideyoshi; and Ming dynasty China, the Middle Kingdom, the center of the East Asian world. The Chinese are dealing with problems of their own in the Ming dynasty’s declining years and, like the Koreans, are not paying much attention to what is going on in Japan.
