Today on our 2016 Kia Sorento, we're going to be taking a look at, and installing the universal installation kit for trailer brake controllers, part number ETBC7. Here's what our ETBC7 looks like fully installed. It's going to give you a bracket to mount our 7-way, and it's also going to have a 4-pole flat on the end of our connector as well. Now, this is going to allow us to wire up most brake controllers. In our application we installed a Hopkins INSIGHT Flex Mount, but it's going to work with most traditional style brake controllers as well. In order to install this, you're going to need to already have a 4-pole flat installed on your vehicle. Comes with all the necessarily hardware to get it in place, and let's show you how we get it installed. We're going to start by mounting our 7-way bracket.
Fortunately we have a spot right here on our hitch, so we're going to take our bracket and the supplied hardware. We're going to line up the holes and I'm going to drop down a screw on top. One on each side. Then I'm going to follow it up with a flat washer, then followed by a star washer, and then finally a nut. I'm going to take a Philips head bit, right here, just because of the limited access, and I'm using a 5/16 socket on the bottom of the nut to tighten everything up. We're ready to put our 7-way on to our mount here.
I'm going to slide the wires through. I'm going to put it in place, like that. I can grab hardware, line up my holes, and start bolting everything down. We provide you with a machine screw, and a locking nut. We're going to come from the front, putting our screw through, and putting our nut on the back side. Now, we're going to repeat that process for the other three remaining holes, and tighten everything up.
We come back to our 7-way. We're going to have a 4-pole coming off the back, and we're going to find our factory 4-pole. Now, before we connect them, I'm going to put a little bit of dielectric grease in there to help save it from any kind of corrosion or any other kind of moisture getting in the connector. Now, you can pick this up on our website using part number 11755. We're just going to plug in our factory connector into the back of our 7-way here. Then I'm going to get a zip tie, and zip tie it together, so that way it's a semi permanent connection.
If we take our white wire, with a ring terminal, we're going to need to ground this to the vehicle. We need to find a suitable location. And I'm going to put my ground right here. Just be using a self tapping screw to put it into place. We're going to have a blue, a black, and a purple wire left at the back of our 7-way. Now, our purple wire is for our reverse signal light. Now, we're not going to be using it in our application. I'm going to take a little bit of that electric grease, going to put it in the connector, and then I'm just going to tape up the ends so I don't have to worry about any moisture, or any corrosion coming back up, and feeding back into my 7-way. We already have some connectors on our wires, here. And we do have butt connectors that are included in our ETBC7 kit. Now, I'm going to be replacing all of these connectors and the ones with our kit with some heat shrink connectors, just so I can get a little bit of better protection against moisture and corrosion. Anytime you see one of these connectors, you can pick some up on our website using part number DW05745-10. Since I'm replacing these connectors, I'm going to cut the ends off. We're going to strip the ends of the wires, and then I'll attach my heat shrink butt connector. We're going to need to find our gray duplex wire here. We're going to need to cut a small slit to separate our black and white wire inside our sheathing. Now, I do want to mention, you want to be extra careful not to pierce the wires inside. You can either take a pair of cutters, a pair of scissors, a utility knife, or whatever you have. Just be careful not to cut the wires on the inside. Just make a small incision. Then you should be able to peel enough of it apart to separate the wires. We're going to strip both ends off of our black, and white wire in our duplex wire. We're going to take the black wire, and we're going to connect to our other black wire using the butt connector we just put on. And our white wire is going to connect to our blue wire. Now, y
