Twelve-year-old James, still shaken by the car accident that claimed his mother two years earlier, struggles in silence while living with his distant father and well-meaning but unwelcome stepmother. When an imaginary game leads him to accidentally break the fence of elderly neighbor Maddy Bennet, she demands he fix it—sparking an unexpected friendship between two people bound by loss. As Maddy shares the story of her son who never returned from Vietnam and gently urges James to confront his own buried grief, his parents grow uneasy and forbid their meetings, leaving James feeling abandoned once more. But when Maddy suffers a heart attack, James is allowed to care for her, only to face another painful farewell that ultimately brings him closer to the family he thought he had lost.
