A dybbuk is the spirit of a dead person who takes over a living body, speaking from her throat with his own voice.
Set in the 19th century in a Jewish shtetl in Eastern Europe, An-ski’s Der Dybbuk: Between Two Worlds tells the story of the unrealized love between a young student (yeshiva bokher), Chonen, and Leah, the daughter of the rich merchant Sender, who has arranged for her to marry a suitable groom against her will. Chonen learns about those intentions and turns to Kabbalistic practice to acquire supernatural power, which finally results in his death. At his tombstone, Leah invites Chonen to dance with her at her wedding to the groom of her father’s choosing, whereupon Chonen’s spirit takes possession of Leah.
The first version of the play was stage in Yiddish by the Vilner Troupe in Waraw (1920), in Hebrew at the Habima Theater in Moscow (1922) and the film version was produced in Poland in 1937, directed by Michal Waszynski. Parker Tyler defined it as "one of the most solemn attestations to the mystic powers of the spirit the imagination has ever purveyed to the film reel."
