The imaginary border between “high” and “low” culture became more heavily guarded at precisely the moment when it grew much easier to cross. In this episode, we’ll explore how mass entertainment and elite institutions intersected with each other in surprising ways throughout the 1830s and 40s. From execution grounds to ivory towers, culture wars became a proxy for class struggle, but they also gave rise to alliances between unlikely partners.
