How does a referral program differ from a giveaway? Isn't it just incentivizing bloat in your email list?

You have to pay for every subscriber. Yeah, getting to say "My list is X thousand big" is nice and all, but you want subscribers that read your newsletter and may decide to make a purchase, not a bunch of freeloaders.

Referral programs are actually the opposite of giveaways.

While giveaways try to cause hype by giving expensive, wow-factor prizes, referral programs can do just fine on humble or even all-digital rewards as long as they fit the audience.

Giveaways are competitive, while referrals are inclusive and collaborative in nature, building community.

Community is fostered by conversation and connection. That's exactly what one friend inviting another one in causes!

Especially if your brand isn't the most open and your readers can't just chat with you at any time, the ability to discuss an interesting newsletter or tip they both read is exciting.

Referred readers are usually of a higher quality than organic discoverers, so don't misjudge how referral programs might speed your growth.
