2 Timothy 2:13, “If we are faithless, He will remain faithful, for He cannot disown Himself.”
Interesting points:
1. In this verse Paul captures the final phrase in this hymn which ends with words of hope: because God is who He is, He will lift us up, even if we fail Him.
2. Those who are saved and endure will reign with the Lord (2 Timothy 2:12) whereas those who reject Him will be rejected by Him. But those believers who struggle or are "faithless," still belong to God. Consistent with God's faithfulness to His chosen people, the Israelites in the Old Testament, He remains faithful even when His people are not. Although they fail Him repeatedly, He continued to keep His promises to them.
3. The final phrase "for he cannot disown himself" underlines that we believers are clothed in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:1–5) and cannot be separated from His love. As Romans 8:38-39 reminds us, "For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord".
Application.
Brothers, what a powerful antidote to perfectionism we have in this verse! When we accept Jesus as Savior of our lives, He provides us top-cover, He covers our sins with His blood. This does not mean that we should keep on sinning, nor does it mean that we can just kick back and relax in our faith. Rather, it reassures us we can be bold in our faith, moving forward as God calls. Although we may falter, although we may fail, He will pick us up, He will not be angered but will delight in our heart to draw closer to Him, learning as a young child does to crawl, walk and run but in the spiritual realm.
What father is angered by his child stumbling as he learns to walk or when he stumbles in a race? Likewise, our heavenly Father is overjoyed when we pick ourselves up and run the course He sets out for us.
May we walk boldly forward, assured of His promises, led by His Spirit and thankful that our Father will never turn His back on us simply because we are His!
