This massive bridge will link Egypt’s famous resort city, Sharm El-Sheikh, with Ras Hamid in Saudi Arabia’s Tabuk region, creating a new travel route that has only existed by air or sea until now.

Originally proposed in the 1980s to make Hajj pilgrimages easier and boost trade, the project faced repeated delays due to environmental concerns over the Red Sea’s fragile coral reefs and geopolitical tensions. But in 2016, Saudi Arabia’s King Salman revived the plan, and after years of engineering and environmental studies, Egypt’s Transport Minister confirmed that construction is ready to start.

The Moses Bridge will be over 30 kilometers long, combining bridges, causeways, and tunnels designed with the latest technology to protect marine life and handle heavy traffic. It’s longer than both the English Channel Tunnel and Golden Gate Bridge combined. This historic connection will allow road and potentially high-speed rail travel between Asia and Africa for the first time.

Beyond engineering, the bridge is a powerful symbol of regional cooperation. It strengthens ties between Saudi Arabia and Egypt, expands economic opportunities through Saudi Arabia’s futuristic NEOM city, and opens up new trade routes linking Africa, Asia, and Europe. For millions of Muslims traveling to Mecca, it provides an easier, safer land route that could reduce airport and ferry congestion.

However, environmentalists warn about the risks to coral reefs, urging careful, sustainable construction. The $4 billion project also demands long-term commitment and security due to its strategic importance.

Work is expected to begin by late 2025 or early 2026. If completed, the Moses Bridge will change the way continents connect, boosting economies, creating jobs, and reshaping global trade and travel.
