We all know that ceiling fans are a welcome addition to any home, or even a porch/patio space, especially in the summertime when they help move air throughout your space. The constant air movement can help make a room feel cooler, even if the temperature does not actually change.

However, ceiling fans can serve another purpose during the winter months or when the temperature drops. By reversing the direction of your ceiling fan, it can circulate warm air throughout your space instead. As hot air rises, this helps spread it around.

It is important to note that not all fans feature reversible motors, so this is something to look out for whenever you are purchasing a new fan. Some reversible motors, such as fans operated by a pull chain, will have a switch located on the motor housing itself. For fans that use a remote control, look out for remotes that are described as "full-function," as these will let you change the direction of the fan from the remote itself.

In summer, set your ceiling fan to rotate counter-clockwise. This direction will drive air downwards, creating a wind chill effect where you feel cooler as the moving air brushes against your skin, similar to how you may feel cooler when a breeze passes by. Although the air itself is not actually colder, the cooling effect means that you can set your thermostat roughly four degrees higher in the summer.

In winter, set your ceiling fan to rotate clockwise. Using this direction helps pull upwards towards your ceiling. Since the warm air will already be resting at the ceiling, pulling cooler air from below will displace the warm air, spreading it throughout your room. Doing this will allow you to set your thermostat lower, keeping your heating bill lower during the colder times of the year.

Before attempting to change the direction of your ceiling fan, always turn it off and wait for the blades to come to a complete standstill. Once the direction has been changed, turn your fan back on and enjoy the air current in comfort.
