Whose Interpretation Is it Anyway?: Dipankar Gupta, Homi K. Bhabha, Sheela Reddy and Sreenivasan Jain

Dipankar Gupta has been a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi for nearly three decades and has authored/edited 20 books. His most recent are QED: India Tests Social Theory and From People to Citizens. For 15 years, he was co-editor of Contributions to Indian Sociology. He has served on several boards including in the Board of Directors of Reserve Bank of India and NABARD.

Homi K. Bhabha is the Anne F. Rothenberg Professor of the Humanities, Director of the Mahindra Humanities Center and Senior Advisor to the President and Provost at Harvard University. He is the author of numerous works exploring postcolonial theory, cultural change and power, contemporary art, and cosmopolitanism, including Nation and Narration and The Location of Culture, which was reprinted as a Routledge Classic in 2004. His next book will be published by the University of Chicago Press.
He is a member of the Academic Committee for the Shanghai Power Station of Art and the Mobilising the Humanities Initiating Advisory Board (British Council), an advisor on the Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives (C-MAP) project at the Museum of Modern Art New York, a Trustee of the UNESCO World Report on Cultural Diversity, and the Curator in Residence of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. In 1997 he was profiled by Newsweek as one of ‘100 Americans for the Next Century’. He holds honorary degrees from Université Paris 8, University College London, and the Free University Berlin. In 2012, he was conferred the Government of India’s Padma Bhushan Presidential Award in the field of literature and education and received the Humboldt Research Prize in 2015.

Sheela Reddy has written extensively for leading Indian newspapers and journals during her 35 years in journalism. A former books editor of Outlook, her writing has appeared in literary magazines and in several anthologies and an edited volume of essays by Khushwant Singh titled Why I Supported the Emergency. Mr and Mrs Jinnah is her first book.

Sreenivasan Jain is the Managing Editor of NDTV. He currently anchors the award-winning weekly ground reportage and investigative show, Truth vs Hype. He also presents Reality Check, a daily show that aims at debunking official myths and government propaganda in a post-truth environment. Jain was selected as Journalist of the Year by the Ramnath Goenka Awards in 2014, by the Red Ink Awards in 2015 and Anchor of the Year at the 2016 ENBA Awards. He was a recipient of the Eisenhower Fellowship in 2000.

We are in an age where miscomprehension, competing truths and fictions. contested histories and constructed scenarios play themselves out even as they polarise and tear apart the social fabric, in times when everyone has the right to interpret and misinterpret. A session that examines the act of understanding and interpretation.
