So it's important to look at cash flow analysis when you're running a business and trying to understand the difference between that and traditional financial statements sometimes those people for a little bit of a loop but I'm gonna explain why it's really important especially in a small business and especially with cyclical types of business so first of all cash flows really just are what they state they are you look at your inflows so that's all your income and stuff coming in you look at your outflows everything that's going out and not to determine what type of cash flow you're going to have but the key to all of that is not just oh I have a forecast of an extra 10 grand this month so I'm good it's all about the timing so you may sell 10 air conditioners to today but you schedule the installs 60 days out and you give people 60 to 90 days to pay so you're actually putting in a lot of expense and time upfront you're not receiving the funds right away that's not necessarily a bad thing it's just that when you're looking at cash flow usually you have to have some type of offset because you can't just wait 90 days to pay your bills when the stuff comes in so usually when you're building a business especially when it's just starting and it's small cash flow can be really really important especially if you didn't put that extra operating money aside to account for the delay in that cash coming in but the timing of it is really important so the difference between profit and cash flow is really that you can be profitable on paper that business is going to look like it's showing a profit but there's no cash in the business for it to continue to operate so usually see this in a problem in businesses that are small and just starting out or businesses that are going rapidly and almost too fast and I always tell them you have be careful because you can grow yourself out of business because I've seen very profitable businesses actually go out of business because of cash flow and they just couldn't pump in enough cash to actually sustain the life cycle especially if they're running a 60 to 90-day payment life cycle on their business so it's really important to stay on top of what your cash flow looks like as well as your profitability.
