This family medicine practice will serve people at every life stage.

"From newborns all the way up through geriatric. We're going to actually deliver babies, we're going to see the newborn babies, and then we'll see them all the way up," says Dr. Rick Waks, Medical Director for Lee Memorial Health System's Family Medicine Residency Program.

These physicians are a throwback to old-fashioned family medicine, to the days when people saw their family doctor for just about everything.

"Family physicians can take care of about 90 percent of the problems that come to them. So we can manage diabetics, high blood pressure, pneumonia, skin infections, virtually anything that is not severely complicated," says Dr. Gary Goforth, Residency Program Director at for the Family Medicine Residency Program.

This is the driving force behind this all-around practice. It's going to be home base for Southwest Florida's first medical residency program. Med students from Florida State University will finish their education in this office, learning the ins and outs of family medicine.

"We have a curriculum that has to be approved by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education. And so we have to teach residents pediatrics, obstetrics, orthopedic, surgery. It's really the full breadth of medicine," says Dr. Goforth.

A total of five medical doctors, a psychologist, a nurse practitioner and eventually 18 medical residents will treat the elderly, pregnant women, adults, adolescents, children, and babies, giving them a one-stop destination.

"It's very convenient to come in for your wellness physical, to be able to go and have your labs, any x-rays that you need, and in this facility be able to go and pick up your prescriptions. So it's convenience all across the board," says Arlene Wright, a nurse practitioner at the Family Medicine Residency Program.

Treating the whole family and whole body. It could be the beginning of a time-honored practice.
