Описание к видео Jussi Bjorling Concert : Bergen, Norway, 1954 : 7 songs/arias : New restorations.

This is, as you would expect, a wonderful performance by Jussi Bjorling but, due to persistent throat problems, his voice was not at it's absolute best for the concert. Please see the notes below.
The songs/arias on the video are as follows;
0:00 Ombra mai fu from Xerxes (Handel)
4:20 Pieta Signore (Neidermeyer)
11:33 Ingemisco from Verdi's Requiem
15:11 Skogen sover (Alfven-Thiel)
17:47 Sav, sav, susa (Sibelius-Froding)
20:06 En svane (Grieg-Ibsen)
22:40 Jeg elsker dig (Grieg-Andersen)
I've tried to improve the sound as much as possible but it's still well below the quality that we are used to today. I have created a playlist with all Jussi's great performances that I have restored/remastered and if ever you want to watch it the link to it is    • Jussi Bjorling (Michael McGrail restorations)

EXTRACT FROM CD NOTES
At the end of 1953 Jussi suffered from an obstinate throat affection that forced him to cancel performances at the Metropolitan as well as a scheduled broadcast with Toscanini, in January 1954, of Verdi's Masked Ball.
The throat trouble continued during the spring but after a London concert to an audience of 9.000 at the end of May, Jussi Bjorling commented that he had never before received such rave notices from the critics.
The Bergen Festival managed to engage him for a concert on June 9, 1954. His Norwegian listeners were enthusiastic but the critics did not think his voice was in the best condition, a fact that is noticeable on this recording. The compensation is Björling's artistic experience and customary musicality.
The first two and the last items on the Bergen concert - Ombra mai fù, Pietà, Signore and Jeg elsker dig - were never recorded commercially by Jussi Björling.
The Handel aria "Ombra mai fù" was one of the very few examples of 18th century opera to be found in his repertoire. The melody, commonly known as Handel's Largo, is originally the introductory aria in the opera Xerxes in which the Persian king expresses his feelings for a mighty oriental planetree.
The "Pietà, Signore" has been presented as by 17th century composer Stradella. The style of this aria di chiesa points, however, to a later date of origin and it is now considered to have been written by Louis Niedermeyer, the Swiss composer active in Paris at the middle of the 19th century.
To conclude the Bergen concert Jussi Bjorling selected four Nordic songs.
Alfvén's impressive "Skogen sover" (The Forest Asleep) (Jussi Björling was the composer's favourite interpreter of this song) and the dramatic Sibelius song "Säv, säv, susa" (Sigh, Sigh, Sedges) are both sung in the original Swedish.
Inevitably, the two last songs are by Grieg, Bergen's own composer: "Jeg elsker dig" (I Love You), one of his earliest compositions and probably inspired by Nina, his wife to be, to the Danish text by story-teller Hans Christian Andersen and "En svane" (A Swan) by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen.
This live recording shows, in spite of Bjorling's indisposition, a remarkable singer, a truly great artist.
