Zomato, the popular food delivery platform, has faced significant backlash on social media and subsequently removed an advertisement campaign following the controversy. The campaign, which coincided with World Environment Day on June 5, aimed to raise awareness about the environmental impact of plastic waste. It featured the weight of waste required to create everyday items, such as a paperweight (3-4 kg of recycled 'kachra') or hand towels (9-12 kg of 'kachra'). The advertisement prominently featured an actor known for his role as 'Kachra' in the 2001 film 'Lagaan'. However, the campaign received strong criticism from social media users who perceived it as drawing an inappropriate comparison between the term 'Kachra' (meaning waste or garbage) and the marginalized character portrayed by the actor. In response to the widespread outrage, Zomato decided to delete the campaign.
