Q: What’s one goal you have for your writing + reading before the year ends?

A: I decided to kind of have a bit of a twist for this one because while I do have goals, I think an important shift I’ve had lately is my approach to goals. And this has been my secret to achieving them.

“What are your New Year’s resolutions?” we ask every year with a laugh, knowing we probably won’t achieve them or will forget about them or you know, life gets in the way.

But that is our problem. Not our goals, but the fact that we already believe we won’t or cannot achieve them.

And then when we take them seriously, we feel the cold grip of fear of failure and grow disheartened when we don’t meet our goals.

When I made it my goal this year to publish a book in January, I had no idea how I would do it. My first novel draft was nowhere near finished, but I kept telling myself that I would publish a book by the end of this year, even though I didn’t know how or when. I knew the door would open, because God is faithful to the dreams he puts in your heart and hands.

Did I finish my novel the way I’d written it out all the way in January? No, I got something better. (Anthology!) And that’s the beauty of goals and life.

Life doesn’t get in the way.

Life is the way.

While your life may look a certain way in your mind, it will turn out better when you allow it to happen. And when you fail at your goal, because you will fail some days, don’t give in to the shame. You’ll be tempted to think that you were supposed to be here by this day or that month. But if you look back at where you stood when you set your goal and how far you’ve come now, you’ll realize how much you’ve grown.

So yes, I do have several goals left from January, like finishing my novel and reading 50 books. And sometimes I’m tempted to think I’ve failed. But then I look back and realize so much has flowered and blossomed into reality.

I’m not extraordinary or any different from you. You have just as much potential as I’ve got. If I can do this, then you can, too.

You were put on this planet to make it more beautiful.

So go chase that dream and make your life a masterpiece.
