ASU Art Museum Curator Julio César Morales interviews artist Edgar Arceneaux about his video “Until, Until, Until…” which is the last video in our Pilot Projects: Art. Response. Now. series on view at the ASU Art Museum through Nov. 7, 2020.

“Until, Until, Until…” by Arceneaux is a reenactment of dancer Ben Vereen’s performance at the 1981 presidential inauguration of Ronald Reagan where he attempted to reclaim history in black face to pay homage to the first African-American film star, Bert William, only to be censored on live television. Arcenaux restages the entire original performance of Vereen.

Pilot Projects is an institutional initiative that emerged from the ASU Art Museum’s unique ability as a university art museum to be adaptive and experimental.
