I was reminded of a consultation I had last year for a dog diagnosed with terminal cancer. The pet’s parent was appalled that the only option their veterinarian gave was euthanasia.

Sometimes, immediate euthanasia is the best option. In this case, hospice and palliative care was what the pet parent wanted and was absolutely reasonable. Many times, veterinarians give euthanasia as the only option because they do not have the specialized hospice experience. Euthanasia is not the only option, and I am so proud of the course Michele Allen of Monkey's House Dog Hospice and Sanctuary and I put together on this topic, An Integrative Approach to Hospice and Palliative Care for Dogs.
