Introduction
The model is not just about coaching. It can be used for organisations, teams, projects, self-development, education and a thousand other realms where insightful and empowered relationship can have dramatic and invigorating effects.
It is about how we are as well as what we do, and the inevitable connection between the two.
The Co-Active Model
The Co-Active model rests on four cornerstones, each of which is essential to supporting the whole theoretical and practical structure.
The 4 Corner stones
The first cornerstone is that People are Naturally Creative, Resourceful and Whole. They are not broken, they do not need fixing and they have their own innate wisdom about how to live their lives.
The second cornerstone is Dance in This Moment, a metaphor for the capacity to deal, elegantly and powerfully with anything and everything that arises in relationship.
The third cornerstone is Focus on the Whole Person, so that we work with the full range of our humanity rather than seeing only a particular circumstance, challenge or opportunity.
Last, but far from least, the model is based on Evoke Transformation. It is not about small incremental changes. It's about the calling forth of radical changes, that are nevertheless evolutionary, just as the acorn turns into the giant oak tree.
The 5 Contexts
In every interaction in every relationship based on the Co-Active model there are five contexts.
There is profound Curiosity about exactly what is happening and what is important; rather than judgments and opinions.
There is Listening, focused directly on the other person and also on the wider field of emotion and environment.
There is Intuition, the use of innate, inner wisdom and experience, often expressed directly through the body.
There is the capacity to Forward the Action, without which nothing changes, while Deepening the Learning, to increase awareness, self-knowledge, capacity and resilience.
Lastly there is Self-Management, which allows us to drop opinions, judgments and evaluations in order to remain in powerful contact and communication.
The Designed Alliance
Those five contexts are supported by a Designed Alliance, which is an explicit and constantly refreshed set of agreements about how a relationship is built and what that relationship requires.
The 3 Principles
At the heart of the model are three principles.
Fulfillment is about vision and values, and the exploration and implementation of what brings us alive and what makes us sing.
Balance is about exploring how we see each and every situation; about exploring other perspectives and then choosing a powerful perspective that will encourage and enable action.
Finally, the principle of Process allows us to be with the full range of our emotions, both joyful and sad, peaceful and angry so that we have the capacity to be resilient and alive no matter what our circumstances.
