Will India Canada Standoff Over Justin Trudeau's Allegation Help BJP In 2024 Elections? | News18

India-Canada relations went from a trusted friend to strained ties over the Khalistan issue. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of involvement in the killing of pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. He was killed outside a gurdwara in Surrey in Canada's British Colombia province in June. The murder was captured by a CCTV camera. At least six men and two vehicles were involved in the killing, according to a CCTV video reviewed by The Washington Post and eyewitnesses it spoke to. As per a report by New York Times, U.S. gave the intel over Hardeep Singh Nijjar death to Canada as it is a part of five eyes alliance.

India, in return, called the allegations absurd and unsubstantiated. The PM Modi government also accused the Canadian government of inaction and shielding pro-Khalistan elements in the country. Not only this, India resorted to tit-for-tat diplomacy and expelled Canadian diplomats. India has also suspended visa services for Canadians and is also mulling to revoke the OCI cards of K-supporters.

EAM S Jaishankar also used his speech at UN General Assembly to take a swipe at Canada.

Let us remind you that a similar situation occurred in 2019 after the Pulwama attack. India acted swiftly and conducted air strikes at Balakot. This move clearly sent a message that the Modi government will not tolerate terror attacks in India and will kill terrorists inside their territory. The BJP swept the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and won over 300 seats.

In 2023, the Modi government's is praised for its bold foreign policy, and its crackdown on pro-Khalistan elements again sends a message that they won't tolerate terrorism.Congress and India Alliance have so far restraint from making any political comments on the issue. Rahul Gandhi who usually attacks BJP over border standoff with China has so far remained mum on this front.
