Spinal cord stimulation is an effective technique for the treatment of pain for some patients. The basic concept of this treatment is small electrodes are placed on the outside of the spine, which act as a pacemaker for the back.

Patients often diagnosed with failed spine surgery syndrome, which is a result of previous surgery to the spine, suffer from long-term pain issues which are not relieved even with strong narcotics. A very light stimulation with electric current is given to the nerves which carry the pain signal, which can be controlled directly by the patient. This stimulation can relieve pain from the failed spine surgery syndrome on a permanent basis.

The patients have to undergo psychological evaluation and a temporary trial to check for the effectiveness of this treatment. If the trial yields a result of over 60-70%, we can go ahead and perform the spinal cord stimulator implant and give the patient long-term, effective pain relief.
