Teddy and the Hitmen were a fiery 1970s soul group out of Chicago, known for their raw, church-inflected harmonies and no-nonsense street wisdom. Led by the charismatic Teddy “Preacher” Johnson, they cut their teeth playing sweaty South Side lounges before landing a deal with GoldTone Records in 1973. Their biggest hit, “N- trynna block my blessings” (1975), became an anthem for anyone who’d ever been sabotaged by haters, bosses, or shady friends.

The inspiration? Legend says they were literally blocked from their blessings one night when their tour van broke down on the way to a performance. A rival local act, ‘The Blue Jays’ they’d been feuding with pulled up, laughed, and refused to give them a jump. Meanwhile, the promoter wouldn’t pay them their deposit back, saying “no show, no dough.” Furious, Teddy sat on the curb with his notebook and wrote the chorus on the spot while the band chanted harmonies around him.

The next morning they recorded the demo in one take at a friend’s garage studio. That bitter moment turned gold: the single hit No. 3 on the R&B charts and made Teddy and the Hitmen famous for telling it like it is—soulful, gritty, and funny enough to make you forget you were mad in the first place.
