Today is World Red Cross Red Crescent Day and, with our colleagues around the world and from the ICRC, we celebrate "Youth on the move".

As you well know, half of our 13 million Red Cross Red Crescent volunteers worldwide are young people. Imagine their potential to lead positive change in their communities.

In focusing on young people and their contributions, we are working to advance the commitments made in the Solferino Declaration in 2009. We are also encouraging real progress on commitments we made at last year's statutory meetings..

Youth around the world continue to make a significant impact in their communities today.

They have been helping communities better prepare for disasters and emergencies, increasing access to health care and building a culture of non-violence and peace. Every day, they are giving time, talent and energy.

They are harnessing the power of new technologies to change minds and inspire action.

In the face of major world challenges, such as climate change, conflicts and violence, urbanization and migration, young people everywhere are showing that they want to be part of the solution.

From Southeast Asia where young people are mitigating the impacts of increasing disasters, to the Middle East where young volunteers are ensuring safe access to healthcare, to Colombia where the next generation of Red Cross Red Crescent leaders are building more peaceful, less violent neighborhoods, youth are, indeed, on the move and reaching further than ever before.

Our Red Cross Red Crescent Movement needs to better recognize the power of young people as agents of change. We should celebrate their successes, but we should also, each of us, consider how more young people can be empowered as leaders in our organization and network.

In this way, all of us can embrace the spirit of Red Cross Red Crescent Day and do our part to ensure the brightest, most dynamic future possible. Thank you very much.
