Rabat is the capital of Morocco and the country's second largest city, with 9.2 million inhabitants. The city is located on the Atlantic coast, on the left bank of the mouth of the Bouregreg River, opposite Salé. Rabat was founded in 1150 by the Almohad caliph Abde Almumine, who built a fortress, a mosque and a residence there.
The city was transformed into a large-scale fortress for use as a point of attack against Spain in 1146. In 1170, due to its military importance, the city began to be called Ribatu l-Fath, which means “fortress of victory”. Rabat became an imperial city in 1660 and was the capital of the French Protectorate in Morocco between 1912 and 1956.
