Today we are going to talk about some other holidays that are celebrated near or around the Christmas Holiday.
They include Hanukkah, Kwanza, Diwali, Boxing Day, Chinese New Year; and Of course our New Year for 2019!
First, let’s take a look at Hanukkah.
This is a Jewish Holiday and it is celebrated for eight days and nights and begins on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev. Traditions for celebrating Hanukkah include lighting their menorahs, spinning dreidels and eating delicious foods!
Next, let's discover Kwanza!
Kwanza means “first fruits.” In the United States, around 5,000,000 people celebrate Kwanza every year. This is a seven day holiday that begins on December 26 and ends on January 1. It is a celebration of African culture. They celebrate with a large feast on the sixth day of Kwanza called Kwanzaa Karamu. Gifts of Kurumba are given to their loved ones on that day. They also celebrate with lighting the Kinara, listening to and performing music. Plus they discuss African principles and history.
Now we will take a look at a holiday called “Diwali,” or the Festival of Lights.
It is a five-day-long Hindu holiday that celebrates life and the victory of good over evil. It takes place in October or November. The holiday is however filled with fireworks, eating delicious foods and spending time with families. The date of Diwali is determined on the Hindu lunisolar calendar.
Boxing Day is a Holiday that is celebrated on December 26.
It actually originated in the United Kingdom. However it is also celebrated in other countries; and is popular in Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Nigeria.
In the nineteenth century, Queen Victoria made Boxing Day a formal holiday for all countries of the empire. It is a day when the maids, drivers, cooks, etc. are given the day off, given small gifts, often in boxes. And they are given as a token of appreciation by their employers.
At the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas, there is a day called the Epiphany, or Three Kings Day.
This holiday is celebrated as the day the three wise men first saw baby Jesus and brought him gold, frankincense, and myrrh as gifts.
On this day in Spain, many children get their Christmas presents.
In Puerto Rico, before children go to sleep on January 5; they leave a box with hay under their beds so the kings will leave good presents.
In France, a delicious King cake is baked. Bakers will hide a coin, jewel, or little toy inside.
The Tuesday before Lent is a time of fun for many people around the World. Mardi Gras usually occurs in February or March, 47 days prior to Easter.
In New Orleans, people wear costumes and attend huge parades for the festival of Mardi Gras. Brazil’s Carnival also features parades, costumes, and music. This day is also known as Shrove Tuesday. In England, some towns have pancake contests in which women run a race while turning a pancake at least three times.
Next, let’s take a look at the “Chinese New Year which is the most important holiday in China!”
Chinese New Year ranges from January 21 to February 20. In 2019, it will occur on February 5th. It is celebrated for 15 days, beginning on the first day of the Lunar New Year. The 15th day of the New Year is the lantern festival which is celebrated at night with a parade.
They spend this holiday with family and loved ones. They eat dumplings for every meal every day during this holiday.
To celebrate the Chinese New Year, many children dress in new clothes to celebrate and people carry lanterns and join in a huge parade led by a silk dragon, the Chinese symbol of strength. According to legend, the dragon hibernates most of the year, so people throw firecrackers to keep the dragon awake.

Although New Year’s Eve, December 31, is not an Official Holiday in America, many Americans celebrate the ending of the old year and the beginning of the New Year. They celebrate by having parties where they invite friends or family.
