Lycia, the brainchild of guitarist and vocalist Michael Van Portfleet, achieved a solemn and profound synthesis of cosmic electronics, synth-pop, psychedelic-rock, and industrial music.
The Burning Circle And Then Dust (Projekt, 1995), the 4th album for Lycia, was a monumental work that completed the moral path of the previous albums. From a musical point of view, the most relevant novelty was the use of the guitar in the foreground, which took the place of the synthesizer. The role of the electronics became to paint the background and horizons, the infinite spaces. From a thematic point of view, the sound remained dark and self-indulgent, but was missing the apocalyptic atmosphere. Into this "twilight zone" entered a ray of light, the page turning prayer and some evidence of salvation, as the tormented soul of Van Portfleet found its way to a minimum of hope. Lycia used funeral chants that exuded 19th century romanticism, visions of titans falling/crashing down in the presence of a cruel fate (Wandering Soul, Slip Away); voids of the psyche (The Return Of Nothing), and nostalgia for something hopelessly lost Where Has All The Time Gone). The technique resembled that of the Doors when (In The Fire And Flames) the style became a slow raga. The more exciting moments were marked by the symphonic melodrama of early King Crimson and early Pink Floyd (August) or when the electronic melodies hover over the guitar chords, chiming bells, and prismatic drones (A Presence In The Woods). These moments took shape in the solemn rhythms of purgatorial ceremonies (The Dust Settles and The Facade Fades) and became the triumphant immortalization of the transience of all things. From this vast ocean of melancholy emerged the first glimmers of life: radiant, flowing melodies (The Better Things To Come) or almost joyous ballets (Pray). The framework of redemption bowed and creaked in Resigned - a long psalm for pipe organ, or when a female voice guides the two most dreamlike trances (Nimble and Surrender), or in These Memories Pass - a humble minimalism of piano and noises. The soul seemed to break under a heavy burden, but it was really just a sign that the crisis had passed. The groan of The Burning Circle, announced itself with the tolling of bells and the strumming of the guitar in crescendo, then vanished in whispers in The New Day. Rebirth was complete. The voice from beyond the grave, Van Portfleet, became a humble human voice. The tracks of And Then Dust were not songs but rather fragments of a philosophical treatise, stages of a metaphysical Calvary. As in the case of the double by the Swans, "Children Of God", this album represented the end of a cycle. Overall, the 4 albums by Lycia represented a conceptualization of the theme of death that moved away from the spasmodic desperation and approached a calm resignation. "I remember things/things from long ago/days that were so bare/times that seemed so low."
