American author Joseph Heller, who shot to fame with his darkly comic first novel 'Catch-22' has died of a heart attack at his East Hampton home in the United States.

He was aged 76 years old.

Published in 1961 to mixed reviews, 'Catch-22' became a cult favourite before it was recognized as an American classic.

It eventually sold more than 10 million copies in the United States alone.

Joseph Heller based 'Catch-22' on his experience in the American Air Force during World War II.

He was a bombardier in combat over Italy and flew 60 missions before he was discharged as a lieutenant at war's end.

He wrote five novels after 'Catch-22' and co-authored the non-fiction 'No Laughing Matter', which told of his
bout in the early 1980s with Guillain-Barre syndrome, a paralyzing nerve disorder from which he fully recovered.

For millions of readers, the exploits of Captain John Yossarian, the hero of his most famous novel, and the rest of his bomber squadron seemed not so much larger than life, but part of life itself.

The phrase 'Catch-22' quickly entered the lexicon - the New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (1993) defines Catch-22 as "a condition or consequence that precludes success, a dilemma".
