Edible bean harvest is underway in Ontario and Hensall Co-op field marketer Meghan Scott has been getting calls from growers seeking advice on best practices for desiccating crops before harvest.

On this episode of the Edible Bean School, Scott shares tips on desiccation timing, product choice, water volume and the importance of maintaining a pre-harvest interval.

When it comes to timing a herbicide application, Scott says growers should not spray a field until at least 90 per cent of the pods have changed colour. She recommends growers look and feel for a papery texture on the pods and open the pods to inspect the beans. "Make sure they are no longer green. Spraying too early will not create a better harvest situation; the beans will just stop maturing."

Time of day is also important for optimum performance, says Scott. She recommends spraying in the heat of the day: "The warmer, the better. The sunnier, the better."

Scott also recommends growers pay close attention to water volume. "Contact sprays can only impact what they touch. That means water volume is critical and should be 20 to 25 gallons, minimum."

Growers must also maintain a pre-harvest interval, requiring them to wait a minimum of two days after spraying before harvesting. The process will vary depending on weather, weed density and leaf drop.
