Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Chairman Lt Gen (Retd) Muhammad Saeed, during a two-day visit, reviewed the progress on construction at key sites of the Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme (K-IV project) being constructed by Wapda on behalf of the federal government to cater to water needs of the largest city of Pakistan.

The key work sites visited by the chairman included the intake structure and pumping stations at Keenjhar Lake in Thatta district, the water conveyance system comprising high-pressure pipelines from Keenjhar Lake to Karachi and one of the filtration plants in Karachi.

The general manager and project director along with contractors and consultants briefed the chairman about contract-wise progress, key targets and their completion schedules. The K-IV project has been divided into eight contract packages for its completion on a fast-track basis. At present, construction work is in progress on all key sites of these packages. The overall physical progress on the project is 64% with spending of Rs86 billion.

"Wapda stands committed to completing the K-IV during 2026 provided funds are made available accordingly," said a press statement. The briefing also encompassed the current financial status and funding requirements in the coming days.

The chairman, while highlighting the significance of the project for Karachi, urged contractors to expedite the pace of work by deploying additional resources to match the timelines. The contractor working on pipeline-2, in particular, needs to catch up with the construction schedule for the respective contract package.

The chairman directed project team to work in close liaison with the government of Sindh for smooth implementation of the scheme.
